Teaching Social, Emotional and Moral Intelligence

As schools move beyond their initial responses to bullying, they see the possibility of creating a school culture where students relate to each other with respect, acceptance and kindness. The teaching of these values, and the skills that underpin them, is referred to as social and emotional learning or “SEL”.

Research carried out in the last decade is confirming the significant impact of SEL in helping students in their social and emotional development and in creating school cultures where problem behaviors such as bullying are markedly decreased. In addition to this, SEL also bolsters student academic performance. Some teachers believe that SEL detracts from the limited time available to teach academics. However, the largest-ever quantitative analysis of the impact of SEL on academic success, carried out in 2005 by Joseph Durlak, Roger Weissberg, and colleagues, shows that SEL programming may increase students’ achievement scores by as much as 10%. SEL is an essential element in the education of all students, regardless of their behavior.

Despite what is now known about the importance of SEL, the teaching of social and emotional learning on so many campuses is at best fragmented and at worst neglected. Schools have adopted programs piecemeal, fail to create standards for student success and do not track either the teaching or the outcome of social and emotional learning. For schools to excel in an increasingly challenging world, they need to introduce SEL into the curriculum using an integrated plan. Often they lack the resources and time to do this and do not know the best choice for their school out of the ever-growing number of SEL programs that are marketed their way.

No Bully® recognizes the challenge and limited resources available to schools in teaching SEL. We help you create an alliance with parents and guardians in raising the social and emotional skills of their children and working together with teachers to support the values of your school community. In this long-term partnership with No Bully we provide you with the tools, expertise and opportunity to overview the teaching of SEL at your school and help you identify, integrate, plan and teach the curriculum which will best develop the values and skills for which your school stands.

"We learned a lot in a fun way. We really liked the scarfs. The role plays were great."
-- Sophie, 3rd grade

"The kids learned a lot from you and these types of memories stick much more than book-learning. They were obviously engaged in your teaching."
-- Laurie Grossman, Director of Special Programs, Park Day School, Oakland

"Moving! Effective! Creative! I think that the parents need to experience the performance because it was so powerful!"
-- Stacy French, 2nd Grade teacher, South Bay
